Multi-Instrumentalist Michelle Younger keeps Appalachian Old-Time music alive by preserving and performing a repertoire that is deeply rooted in American History. Her sound is founded on tradition , a technical approach, and a new sensibility. Whether traveling in the internationally renowned act Harpeth Rising or performing solo, Michelle brings the authenticity of the banjo into new and unexpected contexts while bridging the gap between old-time and contemporary folk music.
Michelle's background is in classical guitar, and she is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory (B.M.'07) and Eastman School of Music (M.M.'09). Her classical training influences take on old-time music which is evident in her intricate arrangements and technically impressive performances, both in a solo setting and with Harpeth Rising. With the authenticity of tradition and the proficiency of a conservatory-trained musician, Michelle's musicality, her unique style of clawhammer playing and her new takes on old tunes are what make her such a promising force in modern folk music.
