Dino Plasmati was born in Matera on July 9,1972. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Modern Literature at the University of Bari and got his Diploma in Guitar at the Conservatory “E.R Duni” in Matera. He started playing when he was nine years old and in 1987, founded his first band, the Meridiana Group that toured Italy and abroad, recording four CDs all with Dino’s original compositions and arrangements.
To improve his technique, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Perugia in 1989 under the guide of Jim Kelly and Donovan Mixon. Additionally, he participated in several master classes with various teachers, such as Pat Matheny (Ravenna 2003) and Larry Blank with whom he studied Composition and Arrangement. In 1992, he was awarded as the Best Young Jazz Talent at the Eddie Lang Jazz Fest in Monteroduni.
A refined and versatile musician, Dino performed in many different bands and orchestras acquiring more and more experience thus becoming one of the most accomplished guitarists on the Italian jazz scene. He played in many clubs and festivals such as TIME IN JAZZ in Berchidda, RUMORI MEDITERRANEI in Roccella Ionica (with Orchestra Utopia and Paolo Fresu Sextet), JAZZ & CO in Como, EDDIE LANG JAZZ FEST in Monteroduni, SUMMERTIME IN JAZZ in Prato; GEZZIAMOCI in Matera, MUSIC INN club in Rome, FONDAZIONE N.PICCINNI in Bari, I COLORI DEL JAZZ festival with G.Mirabassi and L. Biondini, ANTIPHONAE JAZZ in Locorotondo, DOLCI ROMORI JAZZ FESTIVAL in Pescara, SERRAVALLE OUTLET IN JAZZ, NORCIA JAZZ FESTIVAL and many others.
His music is often used in TV series and shows, broadcasted also by the Italian RAI and SKY, documentaries, short films, CD ROMs and DVDs for art exhibitions and tourism (Viaggio nelle terre dei Lucani, Omaggio a Giacomo Manzù, Le terre del silenzio, Matera 2 luglio, Lo scheletro Massiccio)
National and international newspapers, specialized magazines and jazz websites showed their interest for this talented Italian musician, noteworthy are Corriere della Sera, Repubblica, Il Giorno, Jazz Hot!, Chitarre, Guitar Club, Ritmo, Tutto Chitarre, Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, Jazzit!, Jazzitalia, Liberalia, Jazz Convention, All About Jazz, Il Secolo XIX, Il Giornale, Il Sole 24 Ore. Some of those even dedicated a deep focus on his music as did AXE Magazine on 2009 when his latest CD “Interactions” was released by Emarcy/Universal.
Dino is the sole Artist Director of the jazz association MIFAJAZZ, which was born in 2006 and grown thanks to the work of many musicians and supporting friends. Since 2009 they held the MIFAJazz BIG BAND FESTIVAL, an international gathering of jazz orchestras and marching bands featuring also the Lucanian Jazz Project (LJP) big band in which Dino plays both roles of conductor and guitarist. Through the years the band has been helding concerts all over Italy hosting international special guests such as R. Brecker, J. Walrath, S. Grossman, M. Rosen, J. Garrison, A. Rovatti, G. Mirabassi, M. Manzi, M. Tamburini, F. Morgera, Joyce Yuille, Rosa Emilia Dias, Rosalia de Souza.
Currently, Dino is carrying out the following projects: OPEN TRIO with the music of his Cd “Interactions” Emarcy/UNIVERSAL, AROUND SINATRA with LJP big band, an homage to the Voice; VIAGGIO NELLE TERRE DEI LUCANI original compositions inspired by the landscapes of Basilicata, Dino’s native region and finally THE ORGAN TRIO with guests.
Along his career, Dino played and collaborated with numerous Italian and foreign great musicians: Evan Parker, Michel Pilz, Bob Mover, Steve Grossman, Randy Brecker, Jack Walrath, Michael Rosen, Alfredo Paixão, Israel Varela, Joyce Yuille, Patrick Clahar, P.Favre,Tamia, G.L. Trovesi, J. McCrae, Joy Garrison, Frankie Novak, Eileina Dennis, M. Manzi, Adam Rapa, Rosalia De Souza, Cheryl Porter, Nicola Stilo, P. Fresu, Bruno Tommaso, Gabriele Mirabassi, J. Girotto, E. Fioravanti, Gegè Telesforo, F.Morgera, E. Colombo, E.Cisi, F. Marini, L. Biondini, Roy Paci, Ada Rovatti, Max Ionata, M. Tamburini, Luca Pirozzi, Ana Flora, A. Zanchi, A. Succi, M. Sannini and many others.
He teaches guitar at the middle school “G.Pascoli” in Matera and History of Jazz Music at the St. Louis College of Music of Rome. He also wrote a book on Egidio R. Duni-Duny, an Italian musician and composer born in Matera who worked in Italy, France and London, playing a key role in the development of the Comédie mêlée d’ariettes in the 18th century.
Dino collaborates with the Italian web site Jazz Convention as musical expert and reviewer.
