Russell Johnson is a twenty four year veteran of the music industry and has been the front man and mandolinist for two very successful bluegrass bands. He has performed throughout much of the United States and Canada and has been a featured artist on sixteen different CD projects. In the 90¹s his band New Vintage recorded for Pinecastle Records and in 1993 they won both the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) National Band contest and the Pizza Hut International Bluegrass Music Showdown. His current band The Grass Cats is in its seventeenth year. Bluegrass Unlimited magazine said that his voice ³has got that Œlonesome¹ quality that makes even a just written tune sound a hundred years old² and placed him in “the first ranks of contemporary bluegrass.”
After playing his first ³official² show in August of 1989 Russell knew immediately that playing and singing would be a part of his life. Since then he has worn a lot of different hats in the business such as singer, songwriter, producer, mandolinist, recording and sound engineer, band leader, record label and studio owner. His original songs have reached the top of the charts, with over twenty charting songs, thirteen on the Bluegrass Unlimited National Bluegrass Survey (Including three #1 singles for the Grass Cats) and The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) has nominated him three times for Songwriter of the year. As a producer he has seven Top 10 CD¹s to his credit, many recorded at his own Comfort Zone studio. Russell plays an Eastman MD 905V.
